Batman: Dark Patterns
The cleanest single place to see Dan Watters fuse detective structure, horror imagery, and Gotham atmosphere into one book.
Dan Watters writes horror, detective fiction, and superhero comics with the same instinct: make the atmosphere heavy, make the structure purposeful, and keep the emotional stakes clear on every page.
Known for: Batman: Dark Patterns, Six Fingers / One Hand, Homesick Pilots, Lucifer, Nightwing
If the story you're writing doesn't work on its own — if the stakes aren't inherently clear within the single issue you're making — then you've gone wrong somewhere.
Dan Watters on Batman, Horror, and the Dual-Book Mystery Splash Pages interview March 8, 2025
Dan Watters is a British comic book writer whose work moves easily between superhero mythology, horror, and formally ambitious creator-owned comics.
He first broke out with Limbo at Image Comics alongside Casper Wijngaard, then went on to build a reputation through books like Lucifer, Homesick Pilots, Coffin Bound, and Arkham City: The Order of the World. At DC he has become one of the sharpest Gotham voices working today, writing Batman: Dark Patterns, Nightwing, and other Batman-adjacent stories with a clear thesis about cities, monsters, and what horror can reveal about people.
Watters is also a founding member of White Noise, the writer's studio and support network he built with Ram V, Alex Paknadel, and Ryan O'Sullivan. That collaborative spirit runs through much of his work, including the dual-book mystery Six Fingers / One Hand, a structurally playful project that invites readers to solve a third hidden story across two companion series.

A strong entry point into Watters' creator-owned horror work, built around a haunted house that follows its characters instead of staying put.
One half of the dual-book mystery that captures Dan's love of structure, reader participation, and unsettling crime fiction.
