About Jim Zub

Jim Zub has built a career across fantasy, licensed adventure, tabletop worlds, and superhero comics without losing his sense of momentum. Conan the Barbarian, Skullkickers, Samurai Jack, Dungeons & Dragons, Thunderbolts, Champions, and Avengers work all sit inside that range. Zub understands pulp pleasure, but he also understands structure: the fight has to read, the joke has to land, and the quest needs a reason to matter.

Standout Moment

I've had thirty, forty of these people who are older than me, old enough to be my dad, and they've said: I've been collecting Conan since 1970

About Jim Zub

Jim Zub has built one of the broadest resumes in modern genre comics by moving comfortably between creator-owned fantasy, all-ages adventure, licensed comics, and major superhero work. He first emerged with Makeshift Miracle, then spent years at UDON Entertainment in multiple roles before breaking out as the writer and co-creator of Skullkickers, a creator-owned sword-and-sorcery comedy at Image that helped establish his voice. He followed that with Samurai Jack for IDW, which expanded from a planned miniseries into a 20-issue run, and a long stretch writing official Dungeons & Dragons comics and related books for IDW and Wizards of the Coast.

At Marvel, Zub wrote Thunderbolts, Uncanny Avengers, Champions, The Avengers, Conan the Barbarian, and multiple one-shots and event books. In 2023 he became the flagship writer of the Titan Comics relaunch of Conan the Barbarian, taking on one of fantasy’s foundational characters and helping reframe Robert E. Howard’s world for a new readership. On Splash Pages, he described the experience as both a dream job and a stewardship role, shaped by readers who have followed Conan for generations.

Outside of publishing, Zub taught drawing and storytelling in Seneca Polytechnic’s animation program before returning to full-time freelance work. His website, newsletter, Patreon, and extensive #ComicsSchool tutorials have also made him a practical resource for aspiring comics creators.

Conan the Barbarian Vol. 1: Into the Crucible cover

Conan the Barbarian Vol. 1: Into the Crucible

Titan Comics / 2024 / Trade paperback

Writer (with Roberto de la Torre, artist)

The cleanest entry point to Zub's current Conan run and the book Drew specifically praised in the Splash Pages interview. It captures what Jim describes in the episode: Conan as the genre template, but also a moral character whose stories are about more than brute force.

Conan: Battle of the Black Stone cover

Conan: Battle of the Black Stone

Titan Comics / 2024 / Miniseries / Trade paperback

Writer (with Jonas Scharf, artist)

The best showcase for the Howard shared-universe material Jim explores in the interview. If the conversation about Kull, Kirowan, James Allison, and cross-time pulp connections grabs you, this is the follow-up read.

Samurai Jack Vol. 1 cover

Samurai Jack Vol. 1

IDW Publishing / 2014 / Trade paperback

Writer (with Andy Suriano, artist)

The interview makes clear how central this run was to Zub's career. It preserves the feel of Genndy Tartakovsky's show, and the Phil LaMarr / Awesome Con story gives the comic extra emotional weight.

Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons cover

Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons

IDW Publishing / Oni Press / 2018 / Miniseries / Trade paperback

Co-writer (with Patrick Rothfuss; art by Troy Little)

This is the funniest route into the tabletop side of Zub's work and a strong example of how he handles licensed-character voice. It also sits right next to the D&D material discussed heavily in the episode.

Skullkickers Compact Attack Edition Vol. 1 cover

Skullkickers Compact Attack Edition Vol. 1

Image Comics / 2024 edition (series launched 2010) / Trade paperback

Writer / co-creator

If Conan is the polished legacy work, Skullkickers is the creator-owned book that shows Zub's own fantasy voice in full. The Gizzard tavern story from the interview makes this an especially good hub-page recommendation.
