Incredible Hulk Vol. 1
The opening act of PKJ's Hulk run, built as a horror story where Banner is the protagonist and Hulk is the monster.
Philip Kennedy Johnson writes big superhero mythology with the discipline of a veteran and the instincts of a horror writer, moving between Batman and Robin, Incredible Hulk, and his Warworld-era Superman books.
Known for: Batman and Robin, Incredible Hulk, Adventures of Superman: Book of El, Action Comics, Alien
I needed the Hulk in this story to be scary, ominous — like, he's the thing that's stalking Banner. Banner's the main character of a horror film, and Hulk is the thing that's stalking him from behind his eyes.
Philip Kennedy Johnson on Batman, Hulk & What's Next Splash Pages interview October 7, 2025
Philip Kennedy Johnson is a comic book writer working across DC Comics and Marvel Comics, known for large-scale, emotionally grounded superhero stories.
Before becoming a full-time writer, he served as an active-duty officer in the United States Army and wrote every one of his published comics while still in uniform. He retired from the Army in mid-2025.
At DC, Johnson drew major attention with Action Comics and the Warworld Saga, then carried that mythology forward in Adventures of Superman: Book of El while also writing Batman and Robin. At Marvel, he launched a horror-inflected Incredible Hulk run built around the idea that Bruce Banner is the protagonist and Hulk is the monster stalking him. His earlier Marvel work includes Alien, a run praised for capturing the tone of the original films.
Johnson is also a former professional trumpeter who toured with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, and he often brings a sense of rhythm, mythology, and family legacy into his comics.
